October 16, 1995 made a difference in the lives of many Black men in America. One person who had a life changing experience was Phoenix resident Thurman Stewart.
On that day Stewart stood with over a million Black men on the United States Capital lawn in Washington D.C., to participate in the historic Million Man March. From that experience he wanted to do something in his home state to promote peace.
“I was so inspired by the Million Man March. You had over a million Black Brothers gathered in one area. There was no crime, no violence, no arguing. It was all peaceful and motivating,” said Stewart.
From that event Stewart got the idea to start the Peace Fest in Phoenix. This year marked the 12th annual event, which featured speeches from community leaders, dancing, poetry, rappers, singers, vendors selling food, clothing and providing pertinent information on health awareness and community issues.
Founded in April of 1999, the attendance from the event has steadily grown from 500 to 8,500 in that past 12 years. “We have not had one incident of violence since we started which proves our community desires unity and peace.”
The past year they had the highest attendance in the Peace Fest history of 8,500 people. The Peace Fest has become a household name.
The purpose of the “Stop the Violence” Peace Fest is to promote peace in our community and bring solutions to plaguing issues like gang violence, domestic violence, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy. The Peace Fest creates an opportunity for young people to express their gifts and talents through Edutainment.
The warm sunny day provided great weather for the family friendly event MC’d by Valley icon, Kim Koko Hunter. The event also featured several car and motorcycle clubs displaying their showcase vehicles. Angel “Missie” Graham showcasing her custom 2004 Lexus, is a member of Nocturnal Car Club “Wolfpack” got involved in the car club through her husband. “My husband has been in car club over 20 years, so I got involved and really enjoy it.” When she got involved there weren’t many women involved. A pioneer she thrived on the excitement of the events, winning trophies.
Cephus Johnson, the uncle of Oscar Grant, the 22-year-old Oakland resident that was killed by a Transit Officer, thanked the community for supporting the family and the movie Fruitvale Station, which was based on Grant’s life.
Johnson noted Black men as father’s, uncles, brothers have a responsibility to their families, protecting them, sheltering them and advocating them. Johnson has traveled across the country advocating for justice the Black community and a change in the mind-set of those controlling the justice system.
Min. Nuri Muhammad, from Indianapolis, the Nation of Islam Student Minister, noted the dedication Thurman and Dorrana Stewart have made to provide a quality event, free of violence, safe for the family.
Dr. Warren Stewart, no relation to the organizers, spoke to the crowd regarding the importance of upcoming run-off election between him and his opponent Kate Gallego. Stewart, pastor of First Institutional Baptist Church in Phoenix is perceived to be the underdog in the race had been a fixture in the community of over 30 years addressing community needs.
“I didn’t just move into District 8 a few months ago like my opponent. I’ve been working and living here for over 30 years, working to make this a better place.”

Creating a Revolution through Service and Opportunity is the moto of The RSO Group, Inc.
As profound as it is, its true meaning may not be obvious at first. To the uninitiated it may sound mysterious. To the cynical it may sound cliché. To the suspicious it may sound derived. The RSO Group is an organization that has been 30 years in the making but for those who are just now or soon to be aware of us it may look like something new.
Because of this perceived newness I would like to take some time to explain.
Revolution is defined as an overthrow or repudiation and the thorough replacement of an established institutional system, government, political or other. It is also defined as a sudden, complete or marked change in something. The action of Service means to supply with aid, information, or other incidental services or an act of helpful activity. Opportunity is a situation or condition favorable for attainment of a goal. By themselves any one of these attributes have merit and purpose but when combined by uniquely in tune individuals who have a special way of looking at most any situation, we believe they can create a entity unlike anything that has ever come before it.
We do in fact plan to create a revolution. Our first product line out of our Enterprise Division, HATEWORTHY, is a revolution unto itself. The concept behind it takes a current piece of popular urban culture and flips it on its head in a way that has never been done before. It is cutting edge while also being personal enough that it can have a different meaning for every individual. It is the perfect example of the kind of unconventional thinking that when broadened creates cultural change.
However, The RSO Group is not interested in revolution for revolution's sake. What good is a revolution if it has no purpose? How does it help your fellow man? We believe that if we are to make a change then it should be a positive one and that everything we do should have that important goal in mind. Therefore, we pledge that no matter the product, the service or the action that every part of The RSO Group's structure will be designed to give back to the community on both a macro and a micro level. Some services will directly and obviously be impactful and positive to the community. Others may be more behind the scenes and subtle. All, in the end in one way or another, will bring benefit to those in need.
Lastly, we at The RSO Group believe we can accomplish these goals by having a keen and creative eye for situations that to many seem like obstacles or hidorances but to us look like opportunity. It is said that opportunity knocks only once but we disagree. Opportunity is constantly incessantly knocking. The problem is most of us never build doors for opportunity to knock on. The RSO Group is building these doors. We are building doors for ourselves as well as our clients, our associates, our affiliates and ultimately the community at large. There is a world full of opportunity available and The RSO Group wants to make as many as possible capable of taking advantage.
If our moto was unclear in the beginning maybe there is a better understanding now. Like all works in progress there will bumps and bruises along the way but faith and perseverance and an absolute dedication to a cause bigger than any individual will make the ultimate success inevitable. The work is just beginning but the enthusiasm and spirit with which we are moving forward has The RSO group RIGHT ON TRACK.
The RSO Group is right now at this moment, Creating a Revolution through Service and Opportunity.

Lexington, KY – Stanley Muhammad remembers the very first time he met Othello Bell and Rob Cannon in 3rd grade at James Lane Allen Elementary in Lexington, Ky. From their very first conversation the 3 of them hit it off.
"From that point on," according to Othello,"through junior high at Leestown until graduation from Brian Station Sr. High every one says we were like 3 peas in a pod."
After highschool the 3 best friends split up for a while. Stanley attended college in Florida, Othello went to E.K.U. in Richmond and Rob stayed in Lexington for a while and took classes at U.K. "We didnt always stay in touch," said Rob,49. "In fact, except for the last 5 years or so there were long stretches where we communicated extremely infrequently and almost never got together as a group."
However, time and distance could not break the childhood bond formed almost 40 years ago. A meeting last year at a cousin's wedding brought the 3 old buddies together long enough to inspire the determination to never be separated again. It took a year but the long awaited result of that meeting is The RSO Group, Inc.
The combined experiences of the 3 business partners in Sales, Marketing, Technology and Promotions has made The RSO Group an important player in the Business Consulting Industry on 2 sides of the country. The 3 say they have plans to change the world and even describing the RSO Group as a consulting firm is a little limiting. "We want everyone to know that even though most would say life should be winding down for us now, Our story is still being written." According to Muhammad, "I don't really think we've done our best work or even gotten to the good part yet."
